An orange coat and orange hat says don’t shoot the same way a red octagon says stop. And it also has been sending a consistent message. It has been saving lives for half a century. The most important reason is that we’ve been wearing hunter orange since the 1970s. If you hunt with someone with red-green colorblindness, by the way, you probably want to wear something in a lime-green or fluorescent yellow shade to go along with your hunter orange. Most people with the more common red-green colorblindness can see fluorescent orange but few can pick out a hot pink garment from a green or brown background. Perhaps the scariest is something we forgot from high school biology class: Pink is not a good color to wave in front of a colorblind person. Pink cap, orange jacket, lime green pants? It was part of the “hunter pink” craze that had invaded legislatures and game and fish agencies across the country.
